Ancient Azoros

The area

Perraibia means the land of passages. Perraibia was the land between Pineios River and Greek Macedonia. She was the northern edge of Larisa Prefecture and Thessaly. Perraibia contained Karya and Leibithra, Kallipeyki and Rapsani area up to Pineios River mouth, Kallithea and Sarantaporo or else the ancient Tripolitis, Elassona, Domeniko and Potamia area and the hole today's Tyrnavos Prefecture (plain Perraibia).
perraibia1This name was given to this particular piece of land, because this area contains all the strategic passages from Macedonia to Thessaly and vise versa. The five strategically unique passages are :

1)Tempi
2)Leptokarya
3)Petra
4)Agios Dimitrios
5)Sarantaporo

The tribe of Lapithes were living here at first in times before the written history. Then in that same mythical times came a tribe named Perraiboi. Known ancient cities of Perraiboi were and still are:

1)Oloosson which is today's city of Elassona
2)Azoros - Dolichi - Pythio which formed Tripolitis
3)Dodoni
4)Kyfos
5)Iloni which is today' Tsaritsani or Argyropouli
6)Chyretiai which is today's Domeniko
7)Gonnoi
8)Malloia

On mountainous Perraibia had been developed and grown the city - states of Kyfos, Dolichi, Pythio and Azoros. The best fortified and most populated city among them was Azoros.
From Azoros and the surrounding area had have began two very fascinating people to take part to Argonautical Campaign together with Jason and Hercules. The first were Azoros, who was the commander of Argo, the ship of the Argonauts. The second person was Mopsos, who was the clairvoyant of the campaign. The fact that two of the Argonauts were from Perraibia, shows how significant kwowlege and skills they had. Very impressive is that Azoros, a guy from a mountainous area was choosen to be the commander of such a significant campaign, which means that he had unique knowlege of the seas.
Except that in this area was going to form itself the first union between city - states in the world. The name of this union were Tripolitis, because of the three participants and was formed from the city - states of Azoros, Dolichi and Pythio. This union was the so called Perraibiki Tripolitis or in ancient greek Amfictiony. This union would last for centuries and would evolve to the so called «Koino ton Perraibon» with the participation of all city - states of Perraibia. The union would last until the conquest of the area from the Romans.

The ancient city - state

azoros21Azoros was builded on today's socalled «Kastri» hill. The city laid out between this hill and today's position of the village.
The city was very well fortified with four succesive series of walls.
This ancient walls are maintained very well until today. According to archaiologist Arvanitopoulos, this walls must be at least 2900 years old, putting them in the early geometric period. This walls are consisting from megaliths, having a rectangular geometric shape and builded together with such accuracy that no gap exists even today.
When did the city first occur is not precisely known. The fact that archaiologists found during excavations tools made out of stone, indicates that Azoros has been inhabited before 5000 B.C. This means a history of Azoros of at least 7000 years.
arxaio_teixos2The city presented great posperity and improvement at the classical period.
Researher Spiros Boubas places Oracle of Dodoni' s Zeus in this area, on which Achilles claims during the Trojan War fighting for the victory. With the prevelance of Perraboi tribe on the Lapithes, the latter were expelled to Ipeirous and founded there the today's well known Dodoni Oracle near today's city of Ioannina. In ancient Azoros was worshiped especially the Thundering Zeus and Apollo.

The Archaiological Site

azoros21The archaiological site of Azoros is located next to today's village, on the hill "Kastri" at a distance of 18km away from Elassona.

Visiting the site you will be able to see and admire the following:

On the "Kastri" hill the visitor is able to see ancient walls from the hellinistic and byzantin period. Within the ancient walls a paleochristian church can be also seen.
arxaio_teixos3In the location called "Palaioklisi" was excavated another palaiochristian church and in "Agios Athanasios" another one. In the "Kopana" location archaiological excavations founded the urban villa of Nikarchos and architectural findings of the famous temple of Lykeios Apollo.
arxaio_teixos1

From the foundings mentioned above we see that this area called Perraibia, this city called Azoros and his people had been living through out the centuries and the milleniums facing the hole written history from beginning until today! This is a unique achievement in global history and happend because of the mountain of Gods, the so called Olympus!

The Archaiological Excavations

At 1912 Profferor and Archaiologist Arvanitopoulos excavated the area and founded a tomb, jars of ashes and coins.
At 1935 a group of locals together with a German conducts excavations and found the tomb s08-daxt4of Greek Macedonian King Archelaos.
At 1959 during excavations were discovered graves and cemetery. At this excavations was present the German Archaiologist Vladimir Milovits. The findings are kept in Larisa Museum.
In  1996 excavations conducted the 7th Byzantine Archaeological Service. Among others they discovered paleochristian churches and other findings, such as «minimi» coins and urban villa of Nikarchos.

This luxurius villa hasn't yet excavated. She took its name from an inscription located in the center of the villa, where King of Macedonia Antigonos is refering to local supervisor Nikarchos. azoros5A roman period temple excavated also, which has 13m x 8m dimensions together with another paleochristian church. In the surrounding area of this temples were founded architectural elements of the great temple of Lykeios Apollo. Additionally 120 parts of an Ionian temple of the 3th century B.C. were founded such as:
1.Cornices
2.Column bases

Azoros History

Ancient and Classical Period

Ancient Azoros was one of the most significant state – cities in the area and part of Tripolis of Perraibia. Together with Dolichi and Pythio founded the first amphictyony in ancient Greece and probably in the world. The citizens of this amphictyony had a common administration, army, economy and other authorities, because they had to face and fight against common enemies. tripolitan_nomismaCharacteristic is the adoption of a common currency in the 4th century B.C. From the first half of 4th century until 196 B.C. Perraibian Tripolis belonged to King of Greek Macedonia. Ancient Azoros can be considered as one of the cities – states with the biggest population in Thessaly. Its fortification consisted of four rows of huge rectangular stone blocks and have been builded in the 5th century B.C. reminding the big walls in Samos.

The foundings of tools made out of stone is guiding us to the fact that the surrounding area has been populated at least from the stone age. Other descriptions through out historical texts and myths, which are non written history, are telling us the story of two individuals called Azoros and Mopsos. Argw1Azoros was the commander of the Argonauts and founder of our village, while Mopsos was the Argonautical campaign clairvoyant. Those two people together with Hercules and Jason went to an expedition to Kolchis by sea with their talking ship named Argo.

In ancient Azoros was worshiped especially Thunderer Zeus and Apollo. Excavated graves are shown the wealth and culture of ancient locals.

arxaio_teixos2

The first historical reference of the city – state is carried out about 317 B.C. while siege of Kassandros's army, greek King of Macedonia. This siege lasted about 6 months because of both, natural and artificial fortification.

At 200 B.C. Titos Libios is describing an enemy force of Aitolians, which invated Perraibia and slotared the local population, including that of Azoros, because they belonged to Greek Macedonian Kingdom.

Ancient artificial fortification exists until today and is beeing admired from visitors and others, because of their astonishing size and shape. In addition impressive is the amount of excavated findings. Major doubs about the location of the ancient theatre and the grave of Greek Macedonian King Archelaos are coming up, especially because of the strange choice of greek Archaiological Service not to carry out excavations in Toumpa location.

Byzantine Period

palaioklhsiAfter the prevalence of Christianity and its adherence the ancient buildings, theatres and temples were destroyed in order to build christian churches and new houses. In this dark ages the population of Azoros has been decreased and with them culture and posperity of previous centuries had been vanished.

In that same period Apollo temple, located in the acropolis, had been destroyed and in the same position Agios Athanasios church is beeing builded.

Because of their strategic location, Perraibia and Azoros, had been invated several times in Byzantine period mainly from northern tribes. At 540 A.C. from the Huns, at 577 A.C. from Slavs, at the 10th century A.C. from Bulgarians and at the 10th century A.C. from the Normans. All of these tribes slotared, burned, stealed and destroyed the area and its inhabitans.

Othoman Period

profhths_hlias1The fall of Constantinopole to the Ottomans in 1453 A.C. brought down together the Byzantine Empire. As early as 1420 A.C. Turahan Bey and his son Omar Bey came to Thessaly and Perraibia as its Ottoman governors. With them a nearly 500 years occupation of Greece, Thessaly and in particular Perraibia would occur. The entire population of the area will become slaves, serfs or the luckie ones free farmers. Othoman families will settle and occupy almost the hole arable land. The remaining land will become estates of local Monasteries and churches.

Azoros, which at that time had the name Boubala, was one of the largest estate of Monastery Olympiotissa. With only 260 residents, Boubala was subjected to administration of Trikala. kentro_xwriouAccording to abbot Anthimos of Olympiotissa Manasteery, todays center of the village has been created at 1785 A.C. There were the main church and the cemetery. East of the church was a three floor Enetic building made out of stones, which had been used for centuries as a shelter.

balkaniko_metwpo

Invasions, torturing, slotering, destructions and burning out of the area continued in this period too. Together with the cruel Ottoman and later the Turkish administration made local population's living very difficult and missarable, unlike the old days. Invasions at 1788 A.C. from the Albanians and at 1877 from Ottoman Turks and Albanians destroyed any progress had been made the last centuries. Azoros people had to wait until 6 Oktober 1912 to be liberated from the Turks, nearly after 500 years of occupation. Thats a half of a millenium!

After Liberation Period

xani1As mentioned before, Azoros's, ancient Perraibia's, northern Thessaly's, Macedonia's and Western Thrace's liberation from the Turks achieved by the Greek Army at the Balkan Wars. Started in 1912 and ended in 1923 with the catastrophie of Smyrni (today's Izmir in Turkey), the genocite of Greek People in Pontos and Armenians by Turkey, which is the transformation and refounding of the remaining teritories of Ottoman empire.

First governor of liberated Azoros was Basilis Bouronikos at 1912. After a peacefull period, thiefs like Thomas Gantaras and Fotis Giangoulas came up, disturbing the life of the local population. These thiefs will kill Nikos Giatas and governor Nikos Tsolakis. Ioannis Apostolakis, Dimitris Papathanasiou and Giorgos Tzartzianis will be also killed during the Anatolian War between Greece and Turkey.

albaniko_metwpoAzorians participated also in WWII, defencing Greece against the Italian invasion in 1940. The first casualty was soldier Dimitris S. Giatas on 5 November 1940 in a battle in Konitsa. Dimitris Chr. Leytheri, Panagiotis B. Papathanasiou, Ioannis P. Tzoutzoukis will follow in the Kleisoura battle at 9 March 1941.

At 18 April 1941 begins the occupation of the area by Germany and Italy. In July of the same year, Italian soldiers hanged a farmer alive from a tree for exemplary, without having any reason to do this. From Autumn of 1941 until 1942 hunger, misery and poverty are beyond imagination. In addition at 5 and 6 July 1943 a two day's tragic will occur. Many houses in Azoros will be burned out and Spyros Dimitriou and Anastasios Papakonstantinou will be shot and killed by the occupying forces. That same year another tragedy will happen with the appearence of typhus, epidemic and infectious diseases which will cause the loss of 50 Azorians. The same scenery will continue during next year. At 10 February 1944 German soldiers will execute in cold blood Dimitris and Paschalia Leyteri.

Withdrawal of Germany from the area at 27 March 1944 will follow the years of civil war until 1950. In 30 April 1947 Basilis Tsamtsouris, Theodoros Markou and Nikolaos Tsikrikas will be killed from govermental forces. In retaliation rebel forces will kill Ioannis Chr. Leyteri and Dimitris I. Bouronikos.

A great personality of this years was doctor Basilis D. Dadaliaras. He was born in Azoros in 1911, where he finished school at 1923. He went to Tsaritsani Gymnasium and graduated in 1929. At 1932 he finished his military service and began his studies in medicine, from which he graduated in 1939. He lived a poor, but decent life, helping the poor and weak people, providing unpaid services. He died in Russia, far from his belonged homeland. His bones and ashes have been brought back with honor, like a brilliant man and patriot deserves.
